History & Mission

In Pursuit of Information Equality

We founded SeeWriteHear in 2000 to pursue information equity for people with disabilities by transforming content, researching new technologies, and providing education for clients across industries. Our comprehensive portfolio of services covers all forms of information access, including print materials, internet accessibility, education, video and film content, and multimedia content in physical and virtual spaces.  We assist clients in achieving both compliance and usability standards by delivering products and services of uncompromising quality.  Our team takes pride in enabling end users of all abilities to more fully participate in culture, study, and economy.

We are proud to be a US-based company with deep expertise in print and digital accessibility, having assisted in the creation of the WCAG guidelines, as well as several other accessibility standards, including chemistry braille and audio MathML.

The SeeWriteHear Team

Integrity, Advocacy, and Commitment

From product delivery to research to advocacy, our teams are dedicated to increasing access for the accessibility communities we serve.  SeeWriteHear has three major product and service channels: Accessible Print Media, Accessible Digital Media, and Software and Consulting.

The Accessible Print Media group consists of Library of Congress–certified braille transcribers and graphic artists who produce accessible print materials for blind and visually impaired readers. The team has decades of expertise in UEB, Nemeth, science, and other braille standards, providing high-fidelity braille volumes to STEM professionals and students working on college and graduate level degrees in high-demand fields like mathematics, chemistry, and biology. Highly trained accessibility writers compose alt-text descriptions of images that convey complete information and relevant detail, while also considering teaching goals, test question integrity, and reader time constraints.

The Accessible Digital Media group converts and produces accessible electronic file formats such as HTML, PDF, and MS Office formats for use with screen readers and other assistive technologies. All accessible digital media is produced to WCAG and Section 508 compliance, and fully inspected for data integrity. The team receives and processes thousands of pages per day, under stringent accuracy, security, and patient privacy requirements.

Our A/V Services division provides expert accessibility features for multimedia content, including descriptive video, captioning, and MathML/HTML5 conversion. Past clients include major educational publishers, as well as government agencies like the National Park Service and the IRS.

The Software and Consulting group provides custom development and services for corporations and government clients. The team has more than 20 years’ experience in helping organizations understand, develop, and implement accessibility plans. We provide ready-to-use tools, including document analysis software, MathML validators, and HTML5 e-readers, enabling clients to quickly build their accessible libraries and websites.
